South African Cuisine

Cuisine in South African is very diverse. Ranging from what we would think to be very unique foods to normal foods. The foods that I found to be the most extreme were sheep head and crocodile, two foods that I have rarely heard of anyone eating. There also are much foods like the United States, with many restaurants in the major cities consisting of hamburgers, steaks and other more well known foods.
South African food also has been influenced by many countries dating back to as early as the 1600's. Throughout time South Africa has been a resting stop for many countries, like India, trying to travel by ship to Europe. As countries started to stop they began to plant some farms. Almonds are an example of a food that was planted and farmed. These farms brought in many slaves and the slaves brought in a sense of their cuisine. The Malay slaves cuisine is one of the most popular that exists in South Africa today. The French Huguenots were known for bringing in different wines. The British and German also played in influence on the foods in South Africa. The Indians also have introduced a lot of cuisine in South Africa. Consisting of of many curry foods, sweets, fried snacks and a popular Indian food called Bunny Chow. Because of the many different cultures that have migrated to South Africa, some think that they have one of the widest range of cuisine in the world.
Beer in South Africa is a lot like that of Europe's and America but there is also a different beer that many of the rural people drink which is a more cloudy and unfiltered beer. Troughout time beer has also been brewed by women. Women have been brewing beer because many of the many were at work in mines digging for gold. The women thought it would be nice brew for the man to have beer have long days of work. I am actually hoping to study abroad in South African and think it would be amazing to experience their very wide range of cuisines.
